April Monthly Color Challenge 2020

Welcome.  It has been a while since I last posted, but life has been crazy.  I hope you are all surviving the craziness of CoVid19.

Today I am part of the monthly color challenge host by Jen at www.patternsbyjen.blogspot.com.

This months color is one of my most favorite.   I love purple.   Some of my favorite flowers are purple: pansys, violets,  and lavender.



This block is very easy to do.   It has flying geese and hsts, which I absolutely love to do.   One of my tips for you is to make sure you press your seams.  You can either press open or to 1 side.

I looked up the meaning of the color purple and found this:
The color purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic.

 Purple is also made up of two color families red and blue.

Dust off an old book blog hop





Today is my day for the dust off an old book blog hop.   I was excited when Bea at www.beaquilter.com posted this.   I started looking through my books and most of those are relatively newer books.  Then I remembered some quilt magazines a friend gave me.   So I looked through those.  I found this one from 1994.  It is called Traditional Quilter. 





I found 2 projects in there that I wanted to do. 

The first was an article called the versatility of the Hexagon.  It takes you through the steps of drawing a hexagon.  I never did learn geometry in high school.  Now I find it would be helpful.    I had a hard time drawing the Hexagon shape for EPP so I was glad I had some I could use.





I liked the little flowers made from hexagon so I decided to make one. 



I now need to applique it on to my background  by hand.   I think this will be a pillow.   The background is a 14 1/2" square.  I am doing a blanket stitch using 3 strands of DMC embroidery floss.  I put spray basting on the back of the Hexagon flowers and out it on the background piece.   Then I safety pinned it for added protection.



The 2nd project was a pattern called Windblown Tulips.



I love tulips and decided to take this pattern and position the tulips in a different way.  I am currently appliquing these in place using a blanket stitch and 2 strands of DMC embroidery floss.   To put these on the background fabric I used heat and bond.  I still need to add my leaves and my stems will be hand embroidered.



As I was trying to get these projects done I got hit with a sinus infection.  All I have wanted to do is sleep.  I guess that is a good thing, but you don't get a lot done.

Color it red blog hop

Hello!!!!!



Welcome to the first day of the color it red blog hop.   This blog hop is hosted by Carol at www.justletmequilt.blogspot.com.

When this blog hop was first announced I knew exactly what I was going to do.   I have had this quilt ready for quilting for some time now, and thought it would be perfect.

Well, life happens.  Work happens. And I was putting in extra time at work.



I seriously thought about just emailing Carol and telling her I just couldn't do it.  Then I remembered these heart blocks I had made.


 Original plan was to make a wall hanging and machine quilt.  Well, for some strange reason hubby and I had been discussing when we were going to remodel the upstairs.  Some rooms had new carpeting in about 22 years ago, and some have not been upgraded in the 25 years we have lived here.  We ended up going to a home show and because hubby had today off he scheduled a home energy audit.  Dang.  Better get rid of stuff.  I had to ban myself from the sewing room to get things done.

So I decided to hand quilt this.  I worked on it every chance I got.  I had hoped to get binding on it yesterday, but to no avail.  But it will be done this week.

As for the dejunking of rooms, closets, etc. I am down to 2 rooms.  1 is my sewing room and 1 is the file/office room, which I currently have some sewing and quilting stuff in.   My sewing room was remodeled about 5 years ago, but I thought if I need to put other things in there, I really only want to organize it once.

So Carol I am sorry I did not get completely finished.  I am really trying to be more organized.  Organization is not my strong point.


I have started working on this one.  I decided feathers on the heart would be fun. Currently my feathers are drawn in and I will start quilting today at lunch time.

Winter blues blog hop






Welcome to the winter blues blog hop.  This blog hop is hosted by Carla at www.createinthesticks.blogspot.com.   when I saw the title of the hop I knew I had to do it.  You see, I have about 5 quilts that I am working on with blue in them.   I thought GREAT!!!! I can get some of these quilts done.  Well, reality set in.  There has been lots of long hours at work and a hubby who has not been in great health and I wasn't getting to my machine as much as I wanted.



When I make quilts, I tend to go with  bed size quilts and they take time to do.

As I said, I have about 5 in progress. 

I have a churn dash I am doing for my son and daughter in law.

Well, the blog hop was fast approaching and I was not getting things done fast.  I wanted a finished project and then I got thinking I could make a doll quilt for a granddaughters birthday.  She just turned 2 and she loves her baby dolls.



  Then I thought a sleeping bag would be fun.




I had so much fun making the sleeping bag.

 As soon as it was done, I ran down to the basement, to the toy box to get the baby doll I had to take a picture.  Then I ran upstairs and showed my hubby.  He thought it was cool.


When we had the birthday party on Sunday, I gave it to her and we showed her how to put her baby in there.  She loved it.

There are requests to make sleeping bags for other dolls, Barbie dolls, and even stuffed animals.  And yes, grandma will do everything in her power to get more done.  These are great scrapbusters.

The Patchwork baby quilt and first finish of 2020

This quilt was pieced together for probably 5 years.  I was just never sure how I wanted to quilt it.   So it sat there in a pile, got moved a few times and finally I decided to quilt it for a baby shower.




 I did a loopy meander, and found I did a couple of open hearts, wrote the word "love" and even found a few spots that I had cursive "L's" in the quilting.





For the border I did wavy lines.  When I first learned free motion quilting I would try for straight lines and get wavy lines.  Now when I try for wavy I get more straight lines.  I learned this border design through a you tube tutorial by Angela Walters @www.quiltingismytherapy.com



I hope this quilt is loved by mom and dad and especially little baby.   Quilts are a great comfort.  I make all of my quilts with love and I want them to be used and loved.

Just a recap: 
No pattern was used.   Just 4.5" squares sewn together.  I did do a border at 5" all around.

Quilting goals for 2020

There are lots of things I want to be able to do in 2020. 

The first is to be organized.   I need to get my quilting and sewing organized.  Make sure I know where things are and clean up after sewing projects.

I want to improve my quilting skills.  Both my hand guided that I use for free motion and my ruler skills.  To do this I have a Pinterest board called quilting designs I want to try.   I will choose 1 design and doodle it on paper and then try it on fabric.  I know that if I practice daily I can do it. And as my boss tells me, I can do anything I put my mind to.









Finish projects.   If I need to put a deadline down for a project to get it done, then so be it.  I need to set aside time each day for my projects.   I will also keep a list of projects that I want to do, then set up a reward program for myself and allow me to start a new project.



Develop lesson plans for beginning quilting classes.  This is so I can teach others quilting techniques.   In doing this I will continue teaching my granddaughters to sew and quilt.

Continue blogging and participate in blog hops each month.  I love blog hops.  This also encourages me to get things down. 

These aren't a lot of goals, but they are things I want to work on.
