Monthly color challenge - 2021 - May

Welcome to the wonderful month of May.    Here in my neck of the woods, it is beginning to warm up.    Spring is always crazy it seems like.  We have nice day and then we get cold.

With a new month comes a new monthly color challenge.   This month is brown.   I don't have a lot of brown in my stash.  But I did find some.

I appreciate Jen and the work that she puts into the patterns for these blocks.     To get this pattern visit her at www.patternsbyjen.blogspot.com.  it is free all month long.

This block is very easy to make.    I whipped it up very quickly.

A couple of tips:

When the pattern tells you to press seams a certain way, do so.   It makes it so much easier to put the quilt together and to quilt it.

I love to do a final pressing using best press.   It makes the block lay very nice.

As you may know for this year, all of the patterns are based on foods.   This months food is potatoes.  I love potatoes.    Here is a recipe I thought I would share.  Thank you to my daughter for sharing this recipe.   She makes donuts quite often.   These are really good.

Potato Doughnuts

1 package active dry yeast

1 1/2 cups warm water

2/3 cup sugar

1 1/2 tsp salt

2/3 cup shortening

2 eggs

1 cup lukewarm mashed potatoes

6-7 cups flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water in 3-quart bowl. Stir in sugar, salt, shortening, eggs, potatoes and 3 cups of the flour. Beat until smooth. Mix in enough remaining flour to make the dough easy to handle.

Turn dough onto well-floured surface, knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. PLace in greased bow, turn greased side up. Cover tightly and refrigerate at least 8 hours.

Punch down dough. Pat 3/4” thick on lightly floured surface. Cut with floured 2 1/2” doughnut cutter. Cover; let rise in warm place until indentation remains when touched, 45-60 minutes.

Heat vegetable oil or shortening (3-4”) to 375 degrees in deep fat fryer or heavy saucepan. Fry doughnuts, turning once, until golden brown, 2-4 minutes; drain on paper. While warm, dip doughnuts in glaze.

Doughnut Glaze

3 cups powdered sugar

1/2 cup boiling water

Mix together until smooth.

In the kitchen blog hop

I was so excited when Carla @www.createinthesticks.blogspot.com aƱnounced this hop.  I had the perfect thing.  I was going to be done early.  Yeah.  Right.   Seems like the best laid plans  don't always happen.

The plan was that the table runners and hotpads I had made at Christmas time would finally get quilted.

I went to quilt my project and it just wasn't working.  For some reason, my machine was skipping stitches and just not cooperating.  I had just quilted with it a couple days ago.

I changed threads and got part of this one quilted.  I used a light gray thread, but should have used a bit darker for the center square.    After a good night's rest, work and a bike ride, maybe I can try to finish quilting it today.

After getting frustrated I went to a drawer in my kitchen and found this hot pad that I had made.   It was a while ago, but it was easy and fun to make.

To make this hotpad I cut a rectangle out of cotton terry cloth  fabric, 2 layers of 100 percent cotton batting  and 1 layer of denim for the back.  I quilted this layer and set it aside.

Then I cut the square pocket with a layer of terry cloth, 2 layers of batting and a layer of cotton fabric.   I quilted those and put a binding across the top.

For the binding I do a double fold binding from a strip that is 2 1/4" wide.   I then put all the layers together and used  the clover clips to hold them in place, and then put binding all the way around the outside edges.

I like my hotpads to be thick, especially if I know I will be using them for cast iron.

Thank you for visiting my blog today.    You can visit all the bloggers for the week.  Just click on their links.  They all have some fun ideas to share.
