It's cool to be square blog hop

Today is my day for the It's cool to be square blog hop. Thank you Carol @ justletmequilt.blogspot.com for hosting this hop and letting me join. I was going to share a beautiful quilt I am working on, but it is not happening. I have had to switch to hand piecing as there is no room in my house to sew right now. We are under major construction at my house right now. But man it will be nice when we are done.

So instead of sharing a quilt, I have chosen to share some hot pads. Hot pads are a huge necessity at my house. I love to cook and bake.

These hot pads whip up fast, and I am glad I had some already done.

I put 2 layers of batting and 1 layer of insul bright in my hot pads to make them thick for outdoor cooking. Cast iron dutch ovens get hot.

One monthly goal - May 2020 - metro medallion

This month is a crazy month for me, as we are remodeling and my sewing room is a storage room for things. So, my one monthly goal, hosted by @www.elmstreetquilts.com, is to get 5 blocks sewn together for my metro medallion quilt by @ www.sewkindofwonderful.com.

I am going for 5 hoping to go for more to be done, but I will be hand piecing most of them as we have limited space right now.

Any sewing I do this month will most likely be done by hand. But, it will be nice to have the remodel done and feel like we have a new home.

Scrap everything and sew blog hop

Hi and welcome to the final day of the scrap everything and sew blog hop.

When Pat @ www.lemontreesnippets.wordpress.com mentioned she was doing a scrappy blog hop I new I needed to join.

Today I am sharing a couple of projects that are ongoing and long term. Every quilter ends up with scraps, right? And it can be hard to throw them away, especially since you know what fabric costs.

A few years ago I came across a really good site for using scraps and this lady has a system set up called the scrap users system. You can read more about it at www.quiltville.blogspot.com. Bonnie has a wonderful system and she even has free patterns available that uses scraps. Through following Bonnie she has taught me that it is okay to even have your background scrappy.

So on to my projects. This one is one that I am working on from a swap group I was in. It is called the spider web block.

Thus one came from a website called https://susies-scraps.com/2015/01/27/crazy-little-strings-diamond-charms-quilt-block-and-tutorial/ .

Both of these blocks are basically the same, you just start with different sizes of foundation squares.

Another thing you can do with your scraps is an English Paper piecing project. I love EPP. It is very portable and fun to do.

April Monthly Color Challenge 2020

Welcome. It has been a while since I last posted, but life has been crazy. I hope you are all surviving the craziness of CoVid19.

Today I am part of the monthly color challenge host by Jen at www.patternsbyjen.blogspot.com.

This months color is one of my most favorite. I love purple. Some of my favorite flowers are purple: pansys, violets, and lavender.

This block is very easy to do. It has flying geese and hsts, which I absolutely love to do. One of my tips for you is to make sure you press your seams. You can either press open or to 1 side.

I looked up the meaning of the color purple and found this:
The color purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic.

Purple is also made up of two color families red and blue.

Dust off an old book blog hop

Today is my day for the dust off an old book blog hop. I was excited when Bea at www.beaquilter.com posted this. I started looking through my books and most of those are relatively newer books. Then I remembered some quilt magazines a friend gave me. So I looked through those. I found this one from 1994. It is called Traditional Quilter.

I found 2 projects in there that I wanted to do.

The first was an article called the versatility of the Hexagon. It takes you through the steps of drawing a hexagon. I never did learn geometry in high school. Now I find it would be helpful. I had a hard time drawing the Hexagon shape for EPP so I was glad I had some I could use.

I liked the little flowers made from hexagon so I decided to make one.

I now need to applique it on to my background by hand. I think this will be a pillow. The background is a 14 1/2" square. I am doing a blanket stitch using 3 strands of DMC embroidery floss. I put spray basting on the back of the Hexagon flowers and out it on the background piece. Then I safety pinned it for added protection.

The 2nd project was a pattern called Windblown Tulips.

I love tulips and decided to take this pattern and position the tulips in a different way. I am currently appliquing these in place using a blanket stitch and 2 strands of DMC embroidery floss. To put these on the background fabric I used heat and bond. I still need to add my leaves and my stems will be hand embroidered.

As I was trying to get these projects done I got hit with a sinus infection. All I have wanted to do is sleep. I guess that is a good thing, but you don't get a lot done.

Color it red blog hop

Hello!!!!!

Welcome to the first day of the color it red blog hop. This blog hop is hosted by Carol at www.justletmequilt.blogspot.com.

When this blog hop was first announced I knew exactly what I was going to do. I have had this quilt ready for quilting for some time now, and thought it would be perfect.

Well, life happens. Work happens. And I was putting in extra time at work.

I seriously thought about just emailing Carol and telling her I just couldn't do it. Then I remembered these heart blocks I had made.

Original plan was to make a wall hanging and machine quilt. Well, for some strange reason hubby and I had been discussing when we were going to remodel the upstairs. Some rooms had new carpeting in about 22 years ago, and some have not been upgraded in the 25 years we have lived here. We ended up going to a home show and because hubby had today off he scheduled a home energy audit. Dang. Better get rid of stuff. I had to ban myself from the sewing room to get things done.

So I decided to hand quilt this. I worked on it every chance I got. I had hoped to get binding on it yesterday, but to no avail. But it will be done this week.

As for the dejunking of rooms, closets, etc. I am down to 2 rooms. 1 is my sewing room and 1 is the file/office room, which I currently have some sewing and quilting stuff in. My sewing room was remodeled about 5 years ago, but I thought if I need to put other things in there, I really only want to organize it once.

So Carol I am sorry I did not get completely finished. I am really trying to be more organized. Organization is not my strong point.

I have started working on this one. I decided feathers on the heart would be fun. Currently my feathers are drawn in and I will start quilting today at lunch time.

Quilting was done by hand with no markings. I just free handed it all.
