I was so excited when Carla @www.createinthesticks.blogspot.com añnounced this hop. I had the perfect thing. I was going to be done early. Yeah. Right. Seems like the best laid plans don't always happen.
The plan was that the table runners and hotpads I had made at Christmas time would finally get quilted.
I went to quilt my project and it just wasn't working. For some reason, my machine was skipping stitches and just not cooperating. I had just quilted with it a couple days ago.
I changed threads and got part of this one quilted. I used a light gray thread, but should have used a bit darker for the center square. After a good night's rest, work and a bike ride, maybe I can try to finish quilting it today.
After getting frustrated I went to a drawer in my kitchen and found this hot pad that I had made. It was a while ago, but it was easy and fun to make.
To make this hotpad I cut a rectangle out of cotton terry cloth fabric, 2 layers of 100 percent cotton batting and 1 layer of denim for the back. I quilted this layer and set it aside.
Then I cut the square pocket with a layer of terry cloth, 2 layers of batting and a layer of cotton fabric. I quilted those and put a binding across the top.
For the binding I do a double fold binding from a strip that is 2 1/4" wide. I then put all the layers together and used the clover clips to hold them in place, and then put binding all the way around the outside edges.
I like my hotpads to be thick, especially if I know I will be using them for cast iron.

ReplyDeleteHow frustrating to have troubles while quilting. I do hope it turns out to be something silly and simple to correct. Oh, nice thick hot pads are the best. Those country boots are kickin’ it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing how you made your hot pad. I would not have thought of denim. Despite your trouble with your machine, I love the feather you have quilted--very nicely done. Sure hope you get your machine straightened out soon.
ReplyDeleteI just hate it when my sewing machine decides to be difficult! I hope that your machine's problem is an easy fix. Love that thick hot pad.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the table runner will be a beautiful finish. Darn machines anyway... I love your denim backing idea. I like my hot pads thick too. Thanks for sharing in the Kitchen Stitchin' hop!
ReplyDeleteThat sweet table runner will be great when it's done. Sometimes, when my machine doesn't cooperate I believe she is just jealous of the attention being shown to my project and she throws a hissy fit. Maybe that's your girls problem after all she let you make the hot pad.
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing your wonderful projects.
ReplyDeleteOh I hate it when my machine and I fight! Hopefully you are able to make peace with yours soon. I love your hotpad. I like mine super thick too and denim on the back is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteIt is no fun to have a machine argue with you so I hope it gets back on track soon. My mom used to put denim on the back of potholders too. She cooked a lot with cast iron so maybe that was why she did that. Great idea and very cute, too! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHope your machine starts behaving soon. I finally had to take mine in because it just wouldn't cooperate. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteOh my post right now is also a table runner AND my machine broke also!!! We are in sync for sure. I'm so bummed having to take my machine in for repair. I feel as though it's losing my baby to summer camp or something!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you get your machine problems figured out. I know how aggravating it can be when your sewing machine acts up. It's a pretty tablerunner.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilting on your table runner, but such a pain that your machine was being cranky! If you finish it up by the weekend, I hope you'll join the TABLE SCRAPS Link Party on my blog. Thanks for the instructions for your "industrial" pot holder!
ReplyDeletePretty table runner and your feathers are great on the quilting!! Nice hot pad too! Thanks for sharing.
