Welcome to the wonderful month of May. Here in my neck of the woods, it is beginning to warm up. Spring is always crazy it seems like. We have nice day and then we get cold.
With a new month comes a new monthly color challenge. This month is brown. I don't have a lot of brown in my stash. But I did find some.
I appreciate Jen and the work that she puts into the patterns for these blocks. To get this pattern visit her at
www.patternsbyjen.blogspot.com. it is free all month long.
This block is very easy to make. I whipped it up very quickly.
A couple of tips:
When the pattern tells you to press seams a certain way, do so. It makes it so much easier to put the quilt together and to quilt it.
I love to do a final pressing using best press. It makes the block lay very nice.
As you may know for this year, all of the patterns are based on foods. This months food is potatoes. I love potatoes. Here is a recipe I thought I would share. Thank you to my daughter for sharing this recipe. She makes donuts quite often. These are really good.
Potato Doughnuts
1 package active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
2/3 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
2/3 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 cup lukewarm mashed potatoes
6-7 cups flour
Dissolve yeast in warm water in 3-quart bowl. Stir in sugar, salt, shortening, eggs, potatoes and 3 cups of the flour. Beat until smooth. Mix in enough remaining flour to make the dough easy to handle.
Turn dough onto well-floured surface, knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. PLace in greased bow, turn greased side up. Cover tightly and refrigerate at least 8 hours.
Punch down dough. Pat 3/4” thick on lightly floured surface. Cut with floured 2 1/2” doughnut cutter. Cover; let rise in warm place until indentation remains when touched, 45-60 minutes.
Heat vegetable oil or shortening (3-4”) to 375 degrees in deep fat fryer or heavy saucepan. Fry doughnuts, turning once, until golden brown, 2-4 minutes; drain on paper. While warm, dip doughnuts in glaze.
Doughnut Glaze
3 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup boiling water
Mix together until smooth.
