Monthly color challenge July 2022

I am so glad to be joining up with Jen @ Patternsbyjen.blogspot.com for another monthly color challenge. Each month this year, Jen has used a spice for the monthly theme. This month the spice is sumac. This is a spice that I have never used. So, I looked it up and learned that it is a spice used most commonly in Middle Eastern cuisine. It's the 5th most used middle eastern spice trailing behind cumin, nutmeg, cardamom, and turmeric.

It complementnts both smoky and herbal elements.

This month's color is purple. I love purple it is one of my favorite colors.

One of the things I do when working on a square in a square, I like to take my triangle piece and fold it in half to find the center, and do the same with my squares.

Here comes the Sun bloghop

Well, it is my day on the blog hop. I am so glad that Carol @ Justletmequilt.blogspot.com join in. I had already planned what I was going to do, and someone else had the same idea. Oh well. I will still share the project.

As I am sitting here writing this post, I am typing fast, as we had a storm come in and I lost power. That is okay, because we need the rain. My daughter who doesn't live far from me texted me and said that it looks like a river is running down her street. So as it is cloudy and rainy , there is no sunshine, not even one of our gorgeous Utah sunsets, so I will share a couple of things with you, that will give us sunshine.

First is this Sunbonnet Sue block. I am doing this by hand and I love it. I am doing hand applique. I love hand applique, because I can take it with me, wherever I go. I am doing a wall hanging and then will do a quilt. These will be samples for a class I will be teaching at the Quilters Heritage Festival in Richfield Utah in October.

Next up is this quilt I put together. I am going to do different designs in the small rectangles and use it for a class called How do I quilt this that I am applying to teach at retreats and at quilt guilds. I was just ready to start quilting in one of the long rectangles with a darker yellow 💛 thread, when the power flickered. Then when it came back on I thought okay, now I will quilt. Nope. We lost it again.

Monthly color challenge - May 2022

I took a few months off from the Monthly Color challenge, due to selling a home, buying one and moving.

This blog hop is hosted by Jen @ Patternsbyjen.com. I really appreciate the work Jen puts into this each month.

I am getting settled, and decided it was time to get back to my blogging and back to doing the monthly color challenge.

For the month of May, the color is blue. Blue is a favorite color for me. I love the blue skies. It also reminds me of a nice blue lake, and robins eggs. I just happen to have a bird's nest under my deck, and I love peering our a window and watching mommy robin feed her babies or setting on the eggs.

This months block was fun to do as it is full of flying geese. I love to make flying geese, they are one of my favorite blocks to make.

A couple of tips:

I love to starch my fabrics. Especially if I am cutting something on a diagonal. It keeps from distorting the fabric. I like best press, but I also like the good old Niagra spray starch. Next time I need to buy some, I might try the liquid starch (STA Flo) and then dilute it. I have heard it works pretty good.

Press and starch your fabric before you cut. It gives a much nicer cut and really makes it nice to work with. I do this as I usually wash all fabrics before I use them. I make clothing as well, and I don't always know what my fabric will be used for when I buy it.

Wonderful world of color blog hop

Welcome to my day of sharing on the wonderful world of color blog hop hosted by Joan at www.moosestashquilting.com. I am so glad she let me join.

I haven't been blogging for a while and I am glad to be back at it. We decided it was time to retire, so we sold our home and bought a new one in a small town. I grew up in a small town and I absolutely love it. It is really quiet and peaceful. I mentioned that we retired, so now I want to spend time writing quilt patterns and teaching at quilt guilds and retreats.

On to the reason you are here.

When I thought about what quilt I wanted to share today, I decided that my yellow brick road quilt was the one. I love this quilt and the colors in it. This pattern was designed by www.atkinsondesigns.com and is a very fun and easy quilt to make.

I have made it a few times and have taught it 3 or 4 times in a beginning quilting class.

Monthly color challenge January 2022

I am so glad to be joining Jen @ www.patternsbyjen.blogspot.com for another fun year of the Monthly Color Challenge. My goal this year is to make at least one of each block, but maybe more, put them together and use them for Christmas gifts.

Before I get to talking about the blocks, I want to share some tips with you. With a new year it is a good time to think about improving your sewing and quilting skills.

1. Always press your fabric. I like to use either Best press or Niagra starch as I am pressing. I prewash my fabrics and I like the feel that the starch gives my fabric.

2. Make sure you change needles on a regular basis. I change them with each major project or after 8-10 hours of sewing. The needles I prefer are schmetz and I tend to use the universal in a size 80/12.

3. Clip your threads. So many machines now have a thread cutter. Use it. Your projects look so much better when you clip the threads.

4. I like to have a lint roller close by. I tend to get a lot of tiny pieces of threads on my projects, so, I use the lint roller to keep those thread pieces at bay.

Now on to this months block.

This months block is really fun and easy to do.it took me less than an hour to cut and sew two blocks up. I wanted to switch my light and dark oranges around.

I hope to do a lot more blogging this year. I have been going through and cleaning and organizing my sewing room and fabrics and found lots of projects I need to finish and then I will be sharing them. So follow me on Facebook or Instagram so you can see what I am up to.

Ghastly Ghouls blog hop

Hi all,

I am not usually into Halloween. I was more so when my kids were younger, but now that they are grown, I have decided that I want to decorate a bit more.

For this hop, hosted by Carol @www.justletmequil t.com, I decided to do some placemats. I had done these for a class that I taught at witches day out at my local quilt shop, where I work.

These placemats were easy to do. They were actually in a panel. There are four panels for the placemats. I then chose my backing and I used 100 percent cotton batting by winline. I love the piece I used for the binding.

I just did some free motion quilting and I used a Bernina 770 for that. I really love the BSR that are on the Bernina machines.

I love the spider web fabric. I had another little idea I was going to share, unfortunately it didn't get done. I will share it as soon as I get it done.

I'm falling for you bloghop

Hi and welcome to my day to share in the I'm falling for you bloghop hosted by Joan @www.moosestashquilting.com. thank you Joan for hosting and allowing me to join and play along.

For my project I am sharing some table runners and napkins.

These table runners were fun to make, and very easy to do. They have 1 layer of cotton batting and the quilting was stich in the ditch and some free motion quilting.
